CSI: Distance Learning

The Problem:

When we transitioned to distance learning in March 2020 everyone I know was doing some scrambling to figure out what tools they could use to make it a tiny bit more palatable. How can we bring in student voice? How can we make direct instruction engaging? How can we invite students to express their learning in something other than a Google Doc?

The Solution: For Sam, a helpful tool in reflecting on these questions has been Allan Carrington’s Pedagogy Wheel. (Please take a breath if you clicked on that link and got super scared of this very dense graphic! You are safe among friends!)

CSI: Distance Learning

The Problem:

Do you want to learn how to make cool graphics for my anchor charts! Our friend Leti downloaded Canva but it looked so complicated and she got overwhelmed.  Also, she saw that there is a monthly subscription? What’s up with that?
The Solution: Sam hacked it with a simple time-lapse video. Not as hard as it looks and super versatile in how to use it.

Check out the time-lapse video (< 1 min) for how to make easy peasy anchor charts!

Google Class Stream Pollution

The Problem:

You’re doing A LOT in Google Classroom and as a result the Class Stream sometimes becomes...polluted...with a combination of announcements, assignments, and posts that become REALLY hard to sort through for kids.
The Solution: Turn off notifications for assignments in the class stream and use it for announcements ONLY! Direct kids to find assignments in the CLASSWORK tab, and voila! It’s no mystery what assignments are due when!

Check out this walkthrough video (0:53) for how to turn off your class stream!
